Princess Reema bin Bandar bin Sultan has been named Arab Sport Personality of the year.
She’s long supported more opportunities for women in the kingdom, even helping secure licences for female-only gyms, and now this Saudi royal has been honoured for her work.
Princess Reema bint Bandar bin Sultan won the Arab Sport Personality Award this week, at the ninth annual Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Creative Sports Awards.
The royal, who last month became “the first woman to lead a federation” for sport in Saudi Arabia, won the title thanks to her role in empowering women through her entrepreneurial spirit and philanthropic efforts, Gulf Business reports.
Prior to her current role as President of the Saudi Federation for Community Sports, Princess Reema headed up a department for women under the Kingdom’s General Authority for Sports.

She revealed on Twitter that she was “very proud” to receive the award, thanking her country and its leadership for all the support and funding in the sports industry.
“It means a lot to me and my fellow countrywomen, and it encourages us to work even harder for our nation,” Princess Reema added.
The royal, the daughter of former US ambassador Prince Bandar bin Sultan, was born in Riyadh but educated in America, earning a degree in museum studies from George Washington University.
Princess Reema has worked as the CEO of luxury retailer Alfa International, is the founder of a creative talent initiative, and has also made a name for herself as an activist for female empowerment.
Other winners at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Creative Sports Awards included HE Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance, who was named UAE Sports Personality of the Year.
Prior to his current role, Sheikh Nahyan was the chairman of the General Authority of Youth and Sports Welfare.
