Upcoming legislation will establish the country as a “role model” for equal opportunities.

It was just last week that the UAE Cabinet announced it was looking at establishing an equal pay law, and that’s not where the fight for gender balance is ending.

The UAE’s Gender Balance Council is currently working on new legislation “that will further strengthen the UAE’s achievements”, the body revealed this week.

The announcement was made by HH Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, president of the council, following the board’s first official meeting of 2018.

The new laws, though not yet publicly detailed, aim to make the UAE one of the world’s most gender-equal countries.

“The Council’s objective is to support the achievement of the wise leadership’s vision and directives to… establish the country as a role model for gender balance legislation in the region,” a statement on Dubai Media Office details.

The council will propose new laws to “support equal opportunities and narrow the gender gap across all sectors,” Sheikha Manal added.

The nation has previously revealed hopes to become one of world’s top 25 countries for gender equality by 2021, with HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum saying gender balance is a “national priority”.

The Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai added last year that the UAE “considers both women and men as equal partners in national development”

In recent times, the nation has seen the introduction of a gender balance guide for companiesimproved maternity leave for government workers, and the formation of the aforementioned Gender Balance Council.
