Shopping is basically a competitive sport around here.

Some might say it’s the most wonderful time of the year. The Dubai Shopping Festival starts on December 26, and it runs right through until January 27.

Basically, it’s a month devoted to one of our favourite activities, with sales as far as the eye can see. Here’s what we’re looking forward to most for the 23rd edition of the festival. By the way, if you want hints on how best to shop sales for things you actually end up using, we have some here.

The opening sale

Mall of the Emirates

From midday to midnight on December 26, you’ll find discounts up to 90 per cent off at a selection of Dubai’s malls. Our perennial favourite, Mall of the Emirates, is participating, as is City Centre Mirdif and City Centre Deira, among others. If you’re planning on coming in hot on the festival, here’s your option.

The shopping pass

If you’ve got friends and family visiting in the next two months, get them onto this. Or hey, maybe grab one for yourself. The DSF Pass is valid from December 26 to February 20, and has options that range from three classic Dubai experiences to three days of unlimited attractions. Whatever you go for, there’ll be delicious dining options too. You could pack a weekend out with water parks and dinner cruises this way, and it’ll be as much as 65 per cent cheaper. Details here.

Get outdoors

Burj Park will host the designer pop-up Market Outside the Box from January 11 to 20. Now in its fifth year, Market OTB offers clothes, souvenirs and some very agreeable ambience –  we’ll be heading down for sure. You can also expect food stalls and entertainment. Full details here.

Prizes and surprises

You know what would probably make your 2018 start off right? Winning a car. The DSF Infiniti Mega Raffle includes a brand-new Infiniti QX60, as well as cash prizes to the tune of Dhs1,000,000. Tickets are Dhs200 and full details are here.

Also worth keeping an eye on? The weekly Friday specials. For two hours each Friday morning, there’ll be a short-running sale on a big brand that won’t be announced until the day before. Keep an eye on social media so you know when it’s one of your favourites, and get to the mall for 10am. Details here.

Fireworks

Is there any other way to celebrate? DSF fireworks will take over Al Seef (8.30pm), La Mer (9pm) and The Beach at JBR (9.30pm) on Thursday and Friday nights throughout the festival, with an additional show to kick things off on December 26. Details here.
