Abu Dhabi is jumping on the health trend that has already got Dubai in its grip – gluten-free homemade food.
Every weekend in the UAE there’s some sort of sporting event. There’s something about the sun, sea and sand that seemingly makes us want to get in shape and eat right. Jumping on the wellbeing craze is newly opened Tawa Bakery in Abu Dhabi, which is the capital’s first homegrown gluten-free cafe.
Located on the beachfront facing Al Muneera Plaza, Al Raha Beach, the Emirati owned venue – the founder is Reem Al Shemari – specialises in serving inventive, continental dishes.
All the healthy dishes, which include freshly baked breads, scrumptious burgers and gourmet sandwiches, premium Italian cheeses and traditional Arabic dishes, are inspired by Al Shemari’s passion for great tasting, honest food.
Those with allergies and intolerances will be delighted to hear that Tawa Bakery is a guaranteed 100 per cent gluten free zone, focusing on wholesome foods with premium ingredients.
Al Shemari said: “Gluten-free food is very misunderstood. I love food and don’t believe a single calorie should be wasted, so even after being diagnosed with celiac disease I wasn’t going to sacrifice taste. I started cooking gluten-free food and my friends thought it was so delicious… they couldn’t believe it was gluten-free. With the lack of gluten-free options in the UAE I thought let’s change the perception that people have and give them a real taste of delicious gluten free food, while at the same time provide those with celiac disease and gluten intolerance a place they can confidently order anything from the menu.”
The bakery has already garnered a huge fan base including Her Excellency Noura AlKaabi, who is also the Chairwoman of Media Zone Authority-Abu Dhabi. The minister was pictured in Tawa Bakery‘s Instagram, happily smiling into the camera. Well, if it’s got her seal of approval…
