It will be the first of its kind in the Arab world

Tania Fares, the founder of the British Fashion Council’s Fashion Trust is bringing the organisation to the Middle East and North Africa.

She first set up the Fashion Trust in 2011, with the organisation providing monetary support and mentoring schemes to young designers in the industry.

In the past seven years, the organisation has helped launch the careers of many up-and-coming designers. Those included amongst its alumni are Emilia Wickstead, Mary Katrantzou and Sophia Webster.

The Fashion Trust Arabia launched this September and is the first of its kind in the region. In an interview with the Financial Times, the fashion icon discussed the difficulties faced by those trying to get into the fashion industry in the Arab world. “There is a lot of talent in the region, but there’s a lack of support,” she said.  “We’re creating a structure within the industry there from scratch” she told the FT.

Budding fashion designers are invited to apply for the Fashion Trust Arabia, with the chance to win one of four awards (covering women’s evening wear, women’s ready-to-wear, accessories, and fine jewellery/fashion jewellery). The winners will also have access to a grant from the organisation, to use to develop their business over the next 12 months.
