She works the street like a runway and the red carpet is her playing field, so it comes as no surprise that pop sensation Rihanna is to be honoured with the 2014 Fashion Icon Award by the CDFA this June.

Steven Kold the CEO of CDFA announced in a statement regarding the award: “We are proud to present Rihanna with the CDFA Fashion Icon Award for her impact on the industry as fashion’s most exciting ambassador in recent memory.” Following in the footsteps of the likes of Lady Gaga, Iman, Kate Moss and Nicole Kidman, the 26-year-old, who only last year was honoured with the Icon award at the American Music Awards, is set to claim what’s rightly hers in the world of fashion, too.

With designers wanting to dress her left, right and centre, the singer has made a huge impact on some of fashions big wigs including Karl Lagerfeld who recently flew Rihanna to his A/W14 show in Paris and Chanel’s Métiers d’Art show in Dallas to sit front row. Rihanna has also been the face of some of the world’s biggest fashion houses including, most recently, the highly praised Balmain Spring 2014 campaign. Another factor for the star being awarded this prestigious accolade is her philanthropic work, which includes her partnership with M.A.C AIDS Fund Viva Glam campaign.

Not only is Rihanna known for rocking other peoples designs, her personal leap into fashion saw her collaborating with high street heavy weight River Island, working on two limited edition collections, which were shown at London Fashion Week. Although the collections were met with mixed reviews, many of the pieces sold out, both online and in stores worldwide. It also led to long-term stylist Adam Selman, who she brought on as the ranges Creative Director, to launch his own label at New York Fashion Week last year.

The 2014 CDFA Fashion Awards will be held at Lincoln Centre’s Alice Tully Hall, New York City on June 2.
