Jumping on the on-going trend of hit reality shows, Dubai Channels Network is launching Fashion Star, a large-scale studio series that has been designed to do for fashion what American Idol and The Voice did for music.
With reality TV shows garnering millions of viewers (Season Two of The Voice alone reached nearly 18 million), Fashion Star hopes to bring global attention to the incredible talent in the region.

The show will see celebrity mentors – designer Reem Acra, model Hanaa Ben Abdesslem and creative director Ramzi Tabia – guide, advise and shortlist an overall winner from 12 budding, but relatively unknown, designers as they work their way to win the chance to create a Dhs500,000 fashion line for one of the region’s biggest online retailers.

Each week, the designers will be challenged to create a new fashion piece to present to the three mentors in elaborate stage catwalk showcases. Adding an element of drama the judges will then choose who they like and who they don’t with a contestant each week facing elimination. The process continues until there is only one sartorial king or queen left standing.

While there are three judges, it is couture designer and Hollywood A-list favourite Reem Acra who gets the final say. In each episode, once all the judges critique each designer on stage, Reem then has the power to save designers she thinks should go on in the competition or face elimination. Not too much pressure then.
A Fashion Star spokesperson said: “Combining human drama, great fashion appeal, and deep love of the creative process, the series is designed to create a new icon in the Arab Fashion World – one that exists and continues to grow well beyond boundaries of the show.”
We literally can’t wait.
Fashion Star will air in Arabic with English subtitles every Wednesday at 10pm on Dubai One from February 3.
