We saw some pretty dramatic weather over the weekend…

For most of us, the weekend’s wild weather in the UAE meant pulling our washing in from the balcony or getting rained on while walking the dog.

Out of the city, though, things were a little more hectic. Think hail-covered deserts, thunder and lightning.

We’ve rounded up some of the best pics from those intrepid folk who saw the storm coming and jumped in their cars to go photograph it – rather than hiding inside like we did. Someone had to.

We keep trying to avoid calling these shots of the purple lightning striking, but it just happened. We’re so sorry. Anyway, isn’t it gorgeous?

Here’s the same effect in motion, filmed in Ras Al Khaimah. According to netweather.tv, purple skies are actually not that uncommon. The effect is caused by precipitation in the air, the evening’s rain makes sense.

It wasn’t all about the skies, though. This hail is pretty impressive too.

It’s not quite a golf ball, but still. Not a bad effort at all.

That’s what we love about the desert – it’s always changing. How beautiful is this rainbow and hail combo?

The weather is expected to stay a bit unpredictable for Sunday too, so we might not have seen the last of this.
