“DIFF seeks to embrace the future of the industry through this strategic shift.”
After 14 years, the Dubai International Film Festival is taking a break.
Organisers confirmed on Wednesday evening that DIFF would not run in 2018, instead moving to a biannual format and returning in 2019.
“DIFF has established Dubai as a world-class destination in the film and content industry,” chairman of the Dubai Film & Television Commission Jamal Al Sharif said.

“We are seeking to redefine the Dubai International Film Festival’s approach towards nurturing growth, creativity and talent.”
Citing international changes to the film industry, Al Sharif said that DIFF would continue to champion local talent and promote cultural understanding between the Middle East and the rest of the world.
“As a forward-thinking player in the global film industry, DIFF seeks to embrace the future of the industry through this strategic shift,” Al Sharif’s statement continued.
“The Festival will continue its significant contribution to the development of the industry, as we look forward to celebrating with the public, film lovers and industry professionals in 2019.”
Dates and a programme would be announced as soon as they were confirmed.
Since its inception in 2004, DIFF has brought international stars and attention to the UAE, and hosted over 2,000 screenings.
Five hundred of those were Arab films, and organisers say they’ve organised funding for 140 Arab movies.
Industry heavyweights like Cate Blanchett, Patrick Stewart, Samuel L. Jackson, Werner Herzog, Emily Blunt, Brad Pitt and Ryan Gosling have attended just in the last few years.
Held at the Madinat Jumeirah, DIFF has been a major event on the city’s style calendar, too.
