And it came via a Middle Eastern designer.
Every now and then you see a red carpet look that makes you pause and take a breath. It’s the perfect marriage of dress, wearer and occasion, and suddenly you’re a little emotional.
As fashion enthusiasts, it’s the kind of thing we live for, and we’ve just had a moment like that with English actress Helen Mirren.

Style hits: This week’s best dressed in the UAE
For the 68th Berlinale Film Festival’s opening ceremony, Mirren opted for a sweetheart-neck ball dress from Rami Al Ali. We think you’ll agree she looked absolutely sensational.
Here’s a full look:
Honestly. There’s so much to love here that it’s a little hard to know what to focus on. The 1950s silhouette, that slate grey, the embellishment, Mirren’s perfect hair and makeup… It’s all extremely positive.
From the looks of things, Mirren agreed. Isn’t this the face of a woman who knows she’s at the top of her game?
Outstanding.
Mirren’s dress is from the Syrian-born, Dubai-based designer’s fall couture collection from 2016, but with a different neckline.
Gorgeous. She paired the dress with a Jimmy Choo clutch and Badgley Mischka shoes – not to mention those diamonds. It’s all very good stuff.
This triumph comes only a week or so after Mirren blew us away with an elegant, modern floor-length number from Reem Acra.
Let’s finish with a reminder that Mirren is 72 years of age and has won so many acting awards that there’s a separate Wikipedia page on the subject.
The woman isn’t short on reasons to smile like that.
