Messages of support and hope fill the internet after the New Zealand shooting

Our condolences to the families of the victims and to Muslims across the world.

On Friday, we witnessed a horrific shooting at a mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand, which left at least 49 people dead and injured dozens of others. The attack, which was live-streamed on Facebook, took place during the Friday prayer leaving the Muslim community in shock and mourning.

These acts are meant to fill us with fear and separate us, but instead messages of outpouring support and solidarity with the muslim community filled the internet shortly after. From HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to Barack Obama, world leaders and celebrities shared words of mourning and support.

We witnessed the most horrific hate crime that killed 49 worshippers on a blessed day. Our condolences to New Zealand, to the families of the victims and to Muslims across the world. On behalf of UAE that declared the Year of Tolerance, we call for a unified stand against hatred.

This morning I hugged my two brown, Muslim boys a little tighter and longer. Black churches, temples, masjids (mosques), synagogues – they target places of worship to push their hateful and terrorist agenda. It pains me to see the “white supremacy” agenda right here at home sending signals across this world that a massacre like #NewZealandTerroristAttacks is part of some kind of call to action. As Pastor Bland Jr in my district says, “We aren’t a country that is divided, but one that is disconnected.” He is so right. I ask us to work towards connection. This will make us stronger and louder.
