Proving the Middle East is becoming a haute hub for couture, a legion of the Hollywood’s most glamorous starlets walked the red carpet wearing show-stopping gowns by some of the region’s top designers.
From jewel-encrusted ball gowns to elegant embroidered dresses and ethereal designs, the red carpet at last night’s 73rd Golden Globes was awash with some of the best styles we’ve seen to date. What was even more exciting about the gorgeous array of gowns was that many of the best dresses were actually designed by Lebanese designers, helping put the Middle East firmly on the fashion map.

Zuhair Murad
Who is he? Zuhair Murad grew up in Baalbek, Lebanon. “I don’t recall a day in my life without a pen in my hand!” he once said, explaining how fashion has been a passion since his childhood. In 1997 he opened his first atelier in Beirut and four years later he showcased at Haute Couture Week in Paris.
Who wore Zuhair Murad? Jenna Dewan Tatum, aka Mrs Channing Tatum, wowed us all and managed to overshadow her handsome husband in a jewel-encrusted gown from the autumn/winter couture collection.

Reem Acra
Who is she? Born in Beirut, Lebanon, Reem Acra was originally eponymous with bridal gowns, coming to fame in 1999 for her gorgeous Big Day creations. However, she soon transferred her attention to detail, distinctive tailoring and modern concepts to couture and ready-to-wear lines, becoming a celebrity favourite in the process.
Who wore Reem Acra? There’s barely an awards ceremony that goes by where a celebrity doesn’t wear Reem Acra. At this year’s Golden Globes actresses Malin Akerman and Downton Abbey star Joanne Froggatt wore the designer’s gowns.

Elie Saab
Who is he? This self-taught designer is one of the Middle East’s greatest fashion exports. Making gowns since he was 18, Elie Saab is renowned for his exquisite couture gowns and stunning dresses that are adored by Hollywood starlets.

Georges Hobeika
Who is he? Born in the small Lebanese village of Baskinta to a seamstress mother, Georges had an early insight into the fashion industry. After interning at Chanel in Paris, he returned to Beirut where he opened his first store in 1995. His first show was in 2001 and he has shown his couture collections in every biannual Paris Couture Fashion Week since.

Krikor Jabotian
Who is he? Krikor Jabotian was born and raised in Beirut and loved playing with colours, fabrics, and textiles from an early age. After a helping hand from Starch Foundation he launched his first collection at the mere age of 23.
