Hollywood heartthrob George Clooney, 53, and human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin, 36, descended on the romantic Venice, Italy, this weekend with an A-list entourage to celebrate their wedding at the Aman Canal Grande luxury resort.
The intimate affair was attended by family and friends, including Hollywood actors Matt Damon, Bill Murray, Ellen Barkin, Emily Blunt and her husband John Krasinski, U2’s Bono, supermodel Cindy Crawford and even US Vogue Editor Anna Wintour.
Arriving in the city on Friday, the canals of the historic city were dominated by the wedding party and enthusiastic paparazzi following close behind them. The media shy couple were in high spirits and unusually embraced the attention from paparazzi and public alike, with Amal looking cool and composed in a black and white striped Dolce & Gabbana dress.
The couple and guests kicked off the celebrations with a rehearsal dinner on Friday evening at Hotel Cipriani before the ladies and gents headed off separately for further festivities. Clooney and his dapper pals went to Da Ivo restaurant, one of Clooney’s longtime favourites and Amal, wearing a fiery red and black custom Alexander McQueen dress, headed to the wedding venue with a bevvy of dark-haired beauties.
The following morning George had breakfast with Cindy Crawford and husband Rande Gerber on the on the terrace of the Belmond Hotel Cipriani, overlooking the Venetian lagoon, while Amal had her hair and make-up done at the Aman. As the sun began to set Clooney and the glamorous wedding party boarded boats to the venue and entered through gold-trimmed curtains.
While the couple asked that guests not bring their phones and personal devices to the ceremony, in order to avoid unsanctioned photo leaks, some details from the celebration were revealed by inside sources – George was expected to wear Armani and Amal an Alexander McQueen gown. Guests would be welcomed to the seven-star Aman’s garden and offered champagne and canapés, followed by a five-course dinner including lemon risotto with lobster. After dinner music and dancing would take centre stage with a string orchestra and jazz trio, and reports that Lana Del Rey would serenade the couple with the classic When I fall In Love.
While Saturday’s celebration was a symbolic ceremony, Clooney and Alamuddin are expected to make the marriage legal in a civil ceremony on Monday which is to be officiated by Clooney’s long-time friend and Rome’s former mayor Walter Veltroni at Venice’s town hall, the Ca’ Farsetti, a 14th century palace near the Aman hotel.
