With our local fashion fest kicking of this week, we caught up with the man in charge.

Bong Guerrero started Fashion Forward in 2013, determined to showcase the best of UAE design. Now in its 10th season, FFWD is bigger and better than ever, he says, and it starts on Thursday.

Here’s what Guerrero is looking forward to most.

A new venue…

“To mark FFWD’s milestone 10th season, we are making a signature move to the heart of d3 at the Design Quarter,” Guerrero says, adding that Design Quarter is a key part of the d3 development.

“It’s already home to over 6000 people and 400 luxury, fashion and design businesses,” he continues. “As an organically developed vibrant and creative neighbourhood, DQ is truly a fitting location for Dubai’s leading fashion event.”

The mix of old and new

“This season is particularly special as we pay homage to the last 5 years with a retrospective exhibition, and the much loved Garden makes it return,” says Guerrero. He’s talking about FFWD’s pop-up shop, which this year will play host to brands like Villa Yasmine and Coterique.

Season 10 has all the elements we’ve come to expect and enjoy Guerrero says, but “on a much grander scale.”

“This edition represents yet another breakthrough in Fashion Forward’s success, it feels incredible,” he says.

Bringing the Middle East to the world

…And the world to the Middle East. FFWD 1o boasts five international labels, ranging from South Korean to Canadian. It’s about an exchange of ideas, Guerrero says.

“FFWD is the definitive fashion platform for the region and it one that has propelled the careers of many regional designers,” he says.

“It has evolved to become a viable platform for international designers to show as they look for a gateway into the Middle Eastern market.”

And another thing or two…

You can attend FFWD yourself – it’s free and open to the public. Just make sure you register for the shows you’ve got your eye on, either here on the site or at the ticket booth on the day. Organisers recommend arriving at least 3o minutes prior to secure your spot.

Off the runway, you’ll find us checking out Sultani Traditions Renewed, Dr Reem el Mutwalli’s collection of Emirati clothing dating back to the 1950s. If you’ve got an interest in social history, this is one for you.

We’re also very interested in Biblotheka, a selection from Tima Ouzden’s collection of fashion books and periodicals. What better way to take a break from the shows?

If nothing else, pack your credit card. The Garden deserves a thorough browse.
