The glam just doesn’t stop.
We’re still catching our breath from the Met Gala, but the Cannes Film Festival is here, and that means more gowns, more glamour, and more gorgeous looks.
Designers from our part of the world tend to be well-represented on Cannes carpets. At the opening ceremony of the festival’s 71st edition, a healthy proportion of the stand-out looks had a strong local connection.
Stars like Cate Blanchett, Fan Bingbing, Penelope Cruz and Jessica Kahawaty stepped out for the ceremony, and to see Todos Lo Saben, the film chosen to open the festival.

Fan Bingbing in Ali Karoui
Fan Bingbing in an incredible couture gown is such a reassuring sight. She brought us one of the festival’s best looks last year in Elie Saab, and this mint confection from Tunisian designer Ali Karoui is another instant classic. It’s got a bit of a 1950s prom dress feel to it, but in the most luxurious way possible.
Her jewels, of course, are De Beers. We can’t wait to see what else she wears over the next week or so.
Jessica Kahawaty in Zuhair Murad
Lebanese-Australian model and activist Jessica Kahawaty is another reliable highlight. This feathers-and-fishtail combo from Zuhair Murad is a frothy, frivolous delight. Kahawaty looks like a movie star.
And those amazing earrings? Swarovski.
Araya Alberta Hargate in Zuhair Murad
We weren’t exactly at risk of running low on drama, but this tomato-red floor-length gown on Thai actress Araya Alberta Hargate brought it anyway.
With a matching cape and perfectly placed fringing and beadwork, it’s textbook Zuhair Murad. Fabulous.
And so to the rest of the world…
Cate Blanchett in Armani Privé
This gown is actually a repeat. Blanchett wore it to the Golden Globes in 2014, and took it out for another spin to make a statement about waste.
Romee Strijd in Alberta Ferretti
Camila Coehlo in Ralph & Russo
Penelope Cruz in vintage Chanel
Lea Seydoux in Louis Vuitton
Julianne Moore in Givenchy
Keep checking back, because we’ll be keeping a close eye on the Cannes red carpet. The festival runs until May 19.
