The symbolic display showed support for the UN HeForShe campaign

Last night half the lights on the Burj Khalifa were dimmed, in support of gender equality. The move was in support of the UN HeForShe campaign, which strives for the advancement of gender equality across the globe. The campaign encourages all people – regardless of gender – to take action to tackle negative gender stereotyping, behaviour and treatment.

The display was organised by HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, to show the UAE’s support of female empowerment and gender equality.

The UN Women in the UAE group praised the display, and in a statement on social media said that 50% of the lights being dimmed symbolized “what happens when the world excludes women and girls.”

The HeForShe campaign first launched in 2014, with the inaugural speech being made by actress and prominent equal rights activist, Emma Watson.

We applaud the move!
