It’s not the sassiest of handles but what do you expect from a president? At least Barack Obama is making an effort to join the modern world. He deserves kudos for that alone, even if he has called himself @POTUS on the social media site. While The White House already has a Twitter handle – @WhiteHouse, in case you were wondering – US President Barack Obama has decided to get on a more intimate level with his nation and has joined the social media site, calling himself @POTUS, meaning President Of The United States, of course.

For his Twitter banner image Barack Obama chose a powerful image from the 50th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery marches

Much like David Beckham when he joined Instagram, within hours of uploading his first post Obama had 1.56 million followers. His first post, which was sent from his iPhone, was a simple hello which hinted that the president was potentially stopped from launching an account earlier. He said: “Hello, Twitter! It’s Barack. Really! Six years in, they’re finally giving me my own account.”

Love or loathe him there is no denying that Barack Obama is one of the coolest heads of state. What other president has danced to Beyonce’s Crazy In Love while walking into the Ellen DeGeneres studios? Even if he did dance like a dad at a wedding, it was shockingly impressive, offering a more approachable side to politics.

Mocking her husband the First Lady Michelle Obama, joked: “It’s about time” from her account handle @FLOTUS (First Lady Of The United States), while Bill Clinton (@billclinton) also chimed in asking the question on everyone’s lips: “Welcome to @Twitter, @POTUS! One question: Does that username stay with the office? .”

To which Obama, whose final term in office comes to an end next year. replied: “Good question, @billclinton. The handle comes with the house. Know anyone interested in @FLOTUS?”

The US President follows 65 people but who are they? As a big sports fan, the former community organiser in Chicago follows the majority of are Chicago sports teams except the rival Cubs – a man has to have boundaries. He also follows his wife, the cabinet and the top US universities, as it stands he  is yet to follow Emirates Woman, but we’re working on that… watch this space.
